A wedding ring is a symbol of marriage. To indicate a matrimonial commitment to his / her partner it is worn by a married person. A wedding ring is mostly consisted of a precious metal e.g. gold, silver, and platinum, with often a diamond at its front. It is typically worn on the base of the fourth left hand’s finger. In Russia, Norway, Poland, Bulgaria, and Germany it is worn on the right hand’s fourth finger.
The custom of wearing a wedding ring was started in European countries, but it has widely spread in other parts of the globe as well.
Wedding Ring Traditional Customs:
Pre-wedding customs describe the wedding ring as the last in a series of gifts customarily given as engagement presents. Incising the name of one’s intended spouse and the date of one’s intended marriage on the inside surface of wedding rings is encouraged in European tradition. It is believed that the sentimentality and the symbolism of the rings are strengthened by this act.
Wedding ceremony customs are the keeping tracks of a wedding couple’s ring by the best man or ring bearer and to present the ring at the symbolic moment of giving and receiving of the ring during the marriage ceremony. It is a tradition in some European countries that the wedding ring be the same as engagement ring with the difference of the incising and wearing of the ring on the different hand finger.
Post-wedding customs in different cultures make the married personals keep wearing wedding rings to symbolically declare their eternal loves for their partners. |
